Authorities are reporting a multi-car oil train derailment near Mosier, with smoke and flames visible near the Rock Creek overpass. We will update when more information becomes available. Exit into Mosier is closed.

Update 3:30 p.m.: According to a flash alert message from the school, Horizon Christian School in Hood River has not yet sent its bus from the school. Students are currently being held at the school "until the situation improves".

Update 2:30 p.m.: Some houses located near the fire in Mosier are being evacuated.

Update 2:20 p.m.: Klickitat County on the Washington side of the river has issued an air quality advisory due to smoke from the fire:

Air Quality in smoke impacted regions of Bingen, White Salmon, and surrounding areas may be unhealthy for sensitive individuals. Smoke advisories provide generalized regional information only. Air quality conditions may change rapidly and vary greatly throughout the county area.

During these conditions limit to light outdoor activities. Sensitive individuals with asthma, respiratory

infection, lung or heart disease, and diabetes may need to remain indoors. Sensitive individuals should be limited to moderate physical activity.

Adverse symptoms may include dizziness, headache, difficulty breathing, coughing, excessive phlegm, and nausea. For specific medical advice please contact your physician.

Update 1:15 p.m.: ODOT is shutting down I-84 westbound in The Dalles at MP 87, and eastbound in Mosier, at MP 64 due to the fire.

UPDATE 1 p.m.: Mosier School is under evacuation, with students relocating to the Wahtonka campus in The Dalles. Anyone who wishes to pick up their kids may do so, but be advised that Interstate 84 is in the process of being closed down in that location.

Wow, scary stuff. I hope everyone is safe. I'm from Portland, and I have to admit, my first thought was "I'm glad this didn't happen in a more populated area like Portland". I hope this gives everyone pause about continuing to send this oil on trains. It really should be stopped. There have been too many of these derailments.
