Bridge guardrail damaged

A suspected vehicle struck the east guardrail on the Hood River-White Salmon Interstate Bridge Thursday afternoon, causing traffic delays in both directions as Port of Hood River crews responded.

Roughly 200 feet of railing was damaged on the northbound right lane, said Port Communications and Special Projects Manager Genevieve Scholl. It was a likely “hit and run,” which the port reported shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday.

Port crews removed the broken section and completed clean-up work by 3:30 p.m., and the traffic flow had returned to normal.

As of Thursday night, the port wasn’t certain of the type of vehicle that did the damage.

Intermittent single lane closures are anticipated next week, when contractors will be on the bridge to replace the damaged section of guardrail. Dates, times, and duration of those closures are yet to be determined. For more information, call the port at 541-386-1645 or email porthr@
