Hood River Valley High School senior Gio Magaña officially signed with the University of Portland on Friday, where he will be heading this fall to play NCAA Division I soccer for the Pilots. Although Magaña did not play soccer on the HRV boys varsity soccer squad his senior year (he elected to play for the Portland Timbers Academy), Magaña was a star player for HRV in previous seasons. Throughout his high school career, he has been named the OSAA Class 5A Boys Soccer Player of the Year twice, was named Oregon Gatorade Player of the Year, and named Boys Soccer Player of the Year for all classifications. Magaña helped lead HRV to an undefeated season and a 5A state title in 2014.
