Team of the Week (most pins over average and handicap series):
Josh Worth: +226, 867
Nancy Asai: +143, 794
Rick Nishimoto: +141, 792
Bernie Keys: +126, 777
Bill Pullum: +123, 774
4,004 total pins (scratch series plus handicap)
There were bunches of big bowling scores in last week’s league action at Hood River’s Orchard Lanes. We can’t remember if the team of the week has ever racked up so many pins like this one did — a total of 4,000 pins from each bowler’s scratch series plus their handicap may be a record for a five-person team. It’s definitely an indicator of some mighty fine bowling, which means our bowlers are getting comfortable with our new synthetic lanes!
Four of our team of the week stars emerged out of the very popular Tuesday Nite Mixed (TNM) League: Josh Worth, Nancy Asai, Rick Nishimoto and Bill Pullum. The robust Mr. Worth demonstrated his pin-busting value by rolling the high scratch series at the lanes last week, blasting a big-time 739 series that was capped by an impressive strike-filled 268 game. Josh was a whopping 226 pins over his average, easily the top performance by all league bowlers last week. That’s kind of like rolling an extra game in a normal three-game series! He was the sparkplug who moved his team into first place in the league after a four-game sweep of their opponents, Double A Orchards.
Superstar Nancy Asai tried to hold up her Double A Orchards team by notching big scratch 259 and 242 games on her way to an exceptional 671 set, which was 143 pins over her average — good enough for the second spot on our big five, but Josh was simply too much to handle this time!
Legendary orchardist Rick Nishimoto harvested a bumper crop of sticks with that forceful style of his, finishing up 141 pins over his average to get the big-hitter slot on the team. Appropriately anchoring our squad is the ultimate Mr. Clutch, Bill Pullum, whose pro-like big-breaking bender propelled him to 123 pins over his average in the session. This is the second week in a row that Nancy and Bill made the team of the week! Do you think they are hot?
Our fifth and final star is Bernie Keys, who earned the cleanup slot on the team by leading all scoring in the powerhouse Fraternal League after slugging a nifty scratch 663 three-game set that was capped by a super 255. Bernie finished up 126 pins over her average, sparking her Hood River Sports Club team into second place in the league after keying a 22-3 shellacking of their opponents. Don’t you just love it when women beat all of the bigshot men bowlers in town?! Nice going, Bernie — once again you have proven why bowling is such a great game.
Lanky Matt Hodges just missed making the team and was only a couple of pins short of a 700 series in the Monday night Industrial League. He had that pro-style backswing of his clicking all night long, finishing up with a scratch 698 set which was 110 pins over his average. Matt led his team, Columbia Hills RV, to a 20-10 thrashing over their opponents. Bryan (Bosox) Mason also blasted the pins in the TNM, finishing 120 pins over his average. He and teammate Bill Pullum led their Got Sand team to a 4-0 triumph over team Da Da Bet Nic. And in the same session, Lenny Bunting was 100 pins over his average, helping teammate Josh Worth in swamping their opponents. Great bowling, everybody!
