HRMS plans for town hall congestion - and civics lesson

Rep. Greg Walden (R-Hood River) will hold town hall meetings Wednesday in Hood River and The Dalles.

Walden will start at Fort Dalles Readiness Center, 402 E. Scenic Drive in The Dalles, from 11 a.m. to noon.

The Hood River town hall will run from 3-4 p.m. at Hood River Middle School, 1602 May St. School will be in session until 3:36 p.m., and several steps are being taken to both minimize disruption as well as facilitate some students’ attending.

• The auditorium doors will be opened at 2:50 p.m. The public should come to the auditorium entrance on May Street.

• The public may not access the rest of the main school building until after 4 p.m.

• Only the restrooms in library will be available to the public.

The Gorge public sessions launch Walden’s town hall sweep through Oregon’s Second District during the congressional spring break.

• The public is encouraged to carpool or walk to the school. “We anticipate that congestion will be an issue,” said Principal Brent Emmons.

• Law enforcement will be on-site to facilitate parking and traffic flow.

In a message to parents, Emmons said, “Our facility is a traditional location for town hall meetings in our community. This has historically afforded our students an opportunity to observe and partake in the democratic process. Our eighth graders will attend the town hall as we further our focus on civics and democracy. They will be seated in the balcony section with a separate entrance and exit to the main building. Students will have the option of dismissal at 3:36 p.m. or continue presence at the Town Hall.”

Emmons added, “Public members who choose to protest are asked to use the sidewalk, preferably on the south side of May Street, across from the auditorium, or inside the actual auditorium. This is requested to minimize disruption to student learning and provide for safe exits from the school to busses, walking, and family vehicles.”
