Horizon Hawks forward Derek Johnston had the hot hand this past weekend as he scored 28 points against Trinity and followed that up with 26 versus Powers.
As of Tuesday, December 19, 2017
After a two-week break since Horizon’s last game, the Hawks were back in action this past Thursday at the Triad Christmas Classic.
Their first game of this tournament for the boys was a Hawk Invitational championship rematch against Trinity Lutheran.
Trinity Lutheran in their first matchup leaned on an experienced roster to come away with the 55-42 win over the Hawks in the championship game.
But over the past two weeks it’s clear the Hawks went to the lab and have regrouped after starting the season 1-2.
In their rematch with Trinity, the Hawks were able to squeeze away with the 64-62 win in the opening round of the Triad Tournament.
Junior forward Derek Johnston led the Hawks against Trinity putting up 28 points while shooting 4-7 form the three-point line.
Freshman guard Caleb Lingel added nine points, six assists and four steals in the Hawks rematch against Trinity.
The win in the first round ensured them a second round matchup with Powers.
The Hawks continued to play well in the second round as Horizon beat Powers 51-37.
Once again, the Hawks were led by Johnston who had 26 points against Powers.
Bailey Holste also had 12 points and five assists.
The Hawks would then get home favorites Triad in the final game.
Up against the host team in the final game of the tournament wasn’t the recipe for success for the boys and they’d end up losing to Triad by a score of 55-27.
Johnston was the leading scorer in this game with 11 points.
The 28-point loss is the second worst point margin of defeat this year for the Hawks and stops what was a two-game winning streak the boys were on.
Back at .500, the Hawks head to Echo on Thursday, Dec. 21 with a 3-3 record.
Echo is currently on a two-game winning streak and are 3-4 on the season.
A win for the Hawks could be the start of another winning streak as they’ll be back home for their next two contests after this week.
