Hood River Valley Adult Center Executive Director Amy Mallett celebrates her one-year anniversary with the adult center July 5.
“I just can’t believe how fast the time has flown by and how much has happened in the last year,” she wrote in the HRVAC July newsletter. The center has expanded its Meals on Wheels program to Cascade Locks, “won some battles and lost some” with last winter’s “Snowmageddon,” and introduced a travel program. The thrift shop has also been revamped.
“I could not be more impressed by the dedication of the volunteers at the thrift shop,” she wrote.
“From our Meals on Wheels drivers, front desk, kitchen and thrift store, I have to say how impressed and thankful I am to everyone.”
The thrift store will hold a “Tools and Jewels” event on Saturday, July 29 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a variety of old and antique tools and personal jewelry pieces from the Nellie Hjaltalin estate.
There will be an Ireland and Northern Ireland trip presentation on Aug. 8 beginning at 11 a.m. Enjoy Irish soda bread and jam, and learn the details of the trip. RSVP for the meeting at 541-386-2060.
A trip to Leavenworth, Wash., is scheduled for Aug. 22-24. Participants will see two outdoor plays — “Sound of Music” and “Bye Bye Birdie” — as well as enjoy the Bavarian-themed town and scenery. Cost is $475 per person and includes transportation, two nights in a hotel (double occupancy), breakfast and show tickets. RSVP by July 24 at the number above.
Friday fun lunch entertainment: Jack Shepherd and Friends, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. July 7, and The Mellow Guitar of Bill Davis from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 12.
The center needs additional volunteers to oversee the front desk one day a week. Stop by the center for information.
