Community Notes for May 10

Ballots must be in mail by May 11

May 11 will be the last day to mail in your Special District election ballot and ensure it reaches county elections in time. Remember to sign the envelope for your ballot only, and return by mail or at drop-off locations at Sixth and State and Cascade Locks City Hall (deadline is 8 p.m. May 16; postmarks do not count).

Call 541-386-1442 if you have not received a ballot or have any vote-related questions.

Owen Stolte remembered

A tree planting and bench dedication are planned at 4 p.m. May 14 in celebration of the birthday of the late Owen Stolte, at the Georgiana Smith Gardens, next to Hood River Library. Stolte died on March 14, 2014, at age 14; May 17 would have been his 18th birthday.

“If you can’t make the party, please know that the tree and bench will be there for you to enjoy forever,” said his mother, Kim Stolte.

‘Immigration 101’ class May 9

“Immigration 101” class will be May 9 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. It is sponsored by Gorge Ecumenical Ministries (GEM). It will feature Immigration Attorney MariRuth Petzing of the Hood River office of the non-profit Immigration Counseling Service. “The event is designed for everyone who wants to learn about our immigration system and be a better-informed member of this diverse community,” said Rev. Vicky Stifter, GEM’s chairperson.

Walking tours start May 15

The first opportunity to join the Historic Downtown Walking Tour this year will be Monday at 11 a.m.

Tours, sponsored by the History Museum of Hood River County, start at the Hood River Hotel at the corner of Oak and First streets and are scheduled every other Monday in June and July (avoiding the July 4 weekend).
