Breweries in the Gorge host ‘Big Swig’ open house

Breweries in the Gorge (B.I.G.) is hosting its second annual multi-brewery event on Nov. 11.

The B.I.G. Swig, a one-day event inviting craft beer fans for brewery open houses, beer tastings, and more. B.I.G. is a non-profit organization that is comprised of 13 breweries located in the Columbia Gorge region of Washington and Oregon, spanning from Cascade Locks to Goldendale (home of the newest B.I.G. member, Dwinnell Brewery.

Each participating brewery will open their doors between noon to 4 p.m. for a unique look at what makes craft beer in Gorge special.

Last year’s Big Swig was cut short by a power outage that affected Hood River and White Salmon.

“The Columbia Gorge region is known for churning out world class beers and is host to a wide variety of brewery concepts and sizes. Twelve of the 13 breweries will host an open-house that will reflect each individual brewery beer styles and approach to the craft beer culture here in the Gorge,” said Caroline Park, owner of Thunder Island Brewing Co in Cascade Locks.

“The last couple of months have been tough on all of us in the Gorge with the Eagle Creek Fire and I-84 closure, we are so delighted to invite everyone out to support our Gorge owned breweries and staff,” she said.

B.I.G. is one of the only non-profit craft beer organizations that has members in two different states, noted Park. Despite a variety of challenges operating between the two states, B.I.G. has been successful by working together, sharing ideas, and promoting craft beer throughout the Gorge. Dwinnell Brewery in Goldendale, which opened this summer, is the newest member of the alliance.
