Last weekend, The HRV girls wrestling team took down Thurston, Century, and Hillsboro at the Oregon Classic Dual Meet Championships in Redmond to win the first place trophy, and they took that momentum into their dual meet matchup with Hermiston on Jan. 17.

There was nothing easy about the girls championship run at the Oregon Classic as they had competitive duals that went down to the wire against Thurston and Century. The Eagles were able to finish off Thurston by a final score of 34-24 and then able to sneak by Century, winning by a final of 30-27. The girls’ largest margin of victory came against Hillsboro, as they won by a final of 36-18.

At this meet, the girls had one second place finish and three third place finishes.

In the 135 pound weight class division, Elena Kroll won by fall with a time of one minute and 43 seconds over Amber Kicinski of Roseburg in the semi-final match. In the championship match, Kroll fell to Central’s Sarah Conner by a fall time of 1:18, but despite the championship loss, Kroll still earned a second place finish for the girls.

At 220 pounds, Christine Marquez, in the third place match, won over Gissel Andrade of Century with a final fall time of 1:52.

Lexie McCafferty beat Dakota Alewine of North Medford by a final fall time of 3:20 in the 125 pound, third place match to earn the girls another third place finish.

Grace Miller at 145 pounds had the other third place finish for the girls, as she took down Sweet Home’s Katen Edwards with a final fall time of 2:41.

Other finishes for the HRV girls at the Oregon Classic: Maria Bishai, win by fall over Alissa Kinney (Rainier) in the third round of consolation, and Emily Mitchell, win by fall over Maggie Petersen (Thurston) in the second round of consolation.

All of these finishes resulted in them hoisting up the Oregon Classic Dual Meet Championships first place trophy.

The week after the wrestling team competed in the Oregon Classic Dual Meet, the Eagles were back at home on Jan. 17 for a dual meet matchup versus Pendleton.

Jason Shaner, the state’s number one ranked wrestler at 132 pounds, continues his dominant season as he defeated the number three ranked wrestler Alex Rendon by a final point score of 23-9.

Another strong performance for the boys on Wednesday night came from Chad Muenzer, the number eight ranked wrestler at 126 pounds. Muenzer won by a 13-2 match decision over Chris Chambers.

At 182 pounds, Beto Rojas earned the Eagles pin chain versus Pendleton, pinning Kirk Liscom in 3:30.

After falling behind in the 138 pound matchup, Cade Parker had a come-from-behind victory over Koby Jones, winning by a final decision of 12-7.

With four match wins and two forfeits in favor of the Eagles, HRV came up short against Pendleton, losing by a final team score of 42-29.

However, this was an HRV wrestling team not at its full-strength Wednesday night, as a few starters took the night off due to illness as they prepare for an eventful Friday and Saturday.

"We are proud of the guys who put themselves in a position to compete Wednesday night,” said Head Coach Trent Kroll. “Now we need to get healthy and be ready for Bend.”

Upcoming Meets:

HRV matched up with Bend for a home dual meet on Friday night (results unavailable at press time).

Then the following day on Saturday, Jan. 20 the wrestling team hosts its annual Elks Tournament with the boys starting at 10 a.m. and the girl to follow at 12 p.m.
