HRV swimming continues to see junior Chad Klaas compete at a high level as he was a part of three first place finishes last weekend at the HRV home meet.



The HRV swim team hosted its January Invitational meet at the Hood River Aquatic Center last Saturday, Jan. 20.

A total of 10 teams competed, including La Grande, Baker, Pendleton, Gladstone, Redmond, Ridgeview, The Dalles, Hermiston, Madras and Hood River.

The girls team had the best finish for HRV as they took second place with a team point total of 219, which was only 14 points behind La Grande’s 233 first place finish.

The girls once again had strong performances from their relay teams as they had a first, second, third and fourth place finishes.

In the 400-yard freestyle relay event, the HRV team consisting of Lillie Tomlinson, Celilo Brun, Courtney Castaneda and Allison Burke finished with a time of four minutes and 11.86 seconds to hold off the team from Baker and win first place in the relay.

And swimming to a second-place finish with a final time of 2:07.71 in the 200-yard medley relay was Burke, Yasmeen Ziada, Brun and Castaneda.

Then in the final relay of the day, the 200-yard freestyle relay, two teams from HRV placed.

In third place with a final time of 1:57.49 was Alea McCarty, Abigail McCormack, Ziada and Tomlinson. Behind them in fourth place, finishing with a time of 2:01.63, was HRV’s Theodora Parkinson, Hazel Farr, Amber Kennedy and Madaket Greenleaf.

In the individual events, Faith Ocheskey stood out for HRV as she had second and third place finishes last Saturday.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Ocheskey swam to a final time of 27.12 to earn her a second-place finish and in the 100-yard backstroke, she ended in third with a final time of 1:11.84.

Other individual performances by the girls last Saturday: McCarty, fourth place finish in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:43.35; Ziada, fourth place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:08; Castaneda, fourth place finish in the 100 yard freestyle with a final time of 1:02.68; Brun, fourth place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a final time of 1:19.34; Tomlinson, fifth place finish in the 200-yard individual medley with a final time of 2:45.31.

Although the boys team finished sixth overall in the team standings last Saturday, they did end the meet with three first place finishes, which junior swimmer Chad Klaas was a part of all three.

In the 200-yard medley relay, the boys team made up of Adam Burke, David Hecksel, Luke Southall and Klaas swam to a best time of 1:53.05, edging out a team from Hermiston for first place.

In his next event, Klaas would win the 50-yard backstroke with a final time of 22.60; two-places behind him in third was Hecksel, who finished with a time of 24.12.

In the 100-yard butterfly, Klaas once again took first place as he finished with a best time of 53.84.

Other individual performances by the boys last Saturday: Burke, third place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a final time of 6:25.85; and Ethan Yoakum, fifth place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.99.

Upcoming meet:

Next up for the HRV swim team is a road meet at La Grande on Saturday, Jan. 27. Start time for this meet has yet to be determined.
