Highway 26 crash claims Portland man

Kevin D. Ludwig died Oct. 26 in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 26 near Welches.

At approximately 6:15 p.m., the Oregon State Police responded to a fatal motor vehicle crash near the intersection of E. Cascade Drive. Ludwig, who was 33, sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash after lifesaving measures by medical personnel. He is the son of Bruce Ludwig of Hood River.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a silver 2005 Honda Odyssey driven by Ludwig was traveling eastbound on U.S. 26 near milepost 39 in the city of Welches.

A witness initially observed Ludwig traveling on the shoulder at approximate five miles per hour; then, for an unknown reason, Ludwig accelerated eastbound in a diagonal manner, crossing the westbound lanes of travel, and drove onto a soft shoulder and collided into a tree, according to OSP.
