Ecology Institute hosts volunteer workshop Thursday

The Columbia Gorge Ecology Institute is hosting a free volunteer workshop for anyone interested in learning about place-based education in the Gorge and local volunteer opportunities in environmental education. The workshop will be held on Thursday, Jan. 11 from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Hood River Library Meeting Room, 502 State St., downtown Hood River.

Lions honor Peace Poster winners

The Hood River Lions Club has awarded the three selected winners of its annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. This year’s theme is “The Future of Peace.” The winners received their awards Dec. 9 at the Hood River Library.

FutureBus visits Cascade Locks Elementary

The Beaverton School District’s “FutureBus,” a mobile maker-space and design studio, visited Cascade Locks Elementary School Dec. 14. In this unique partnership, a team from Beaverton shared design-thinking and robotics curriculum as well as what they’ve learned in two years running the FutureBus, stated a press release.

First Lego League: Robotics winners announced from The Dalles Tournaments

Thirty-six teams of students ages 9 to 14 competed at the First Lego League (FLL) robotics tournaments on Saturday, Dec. 9 and Sunday, Dec. 10. The Dalles Middle School event welcomed teams from as far as Hermiston, Heppner, Irrigon and Ione as well as Klickitat, Stevenson, Dufur, Mosier, Centerville, Hood River and The Dalles. Eleven teams were chosen to advance to the state competition in Hillsboro in January.

Application deadline extended for Soroptimist ‘Live Your Dream’ award

Soroptimist International of Hood River is looking for three Gorge area women who are heads of households to receive $1,500 Live Your Dream Awards to continue their education. Applications are now available at the Hood River Library, Cascade Locks, Parkdale and The Dalles Library. The application deadline has been extended to Jan. 15.
