On Dec. 2, 2009, Beryl Maher, beloved mother, grandmother, cousin and friend, passed from this life to meet her Lord.
She was born Aug. 12, 1937, in Dayton, Ohio, and was named by her maternal grandfather in honor of her maternal grandmother. Her grandparents raised her for the first years of her life, until she moved to California with her mother and stepfather.
Beryl attended Antelope Valley High School in Lancaster, Calif., and graduated in 1955. She attended one year of college at UCLA, and remained a life-long Bruins fan.
She married Francis “Frank” Maher in 1956. They had five children: Michael, Joseph, James, Rebecca and Theresa.
Beryl had many jobs throughout her life, but most enjoyed her time working in the aircraft industry, including her jobs with Northrop, Rockwell and Boeing.
Beryl and Frank lived in Lancaster until Frank retired from his work as an aircraft mechanic at Edwards Air Force Base. They moved to Tehachapi, Calif., and for many years lived happily in a home behind that of their daughter Theresa, son-in-law Todd, and grandchildren Kyle and Kaitlyn.
Beryl was a member of Church of Christ in Tehachapi; chaplain for the Tomo-Kahni Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR); and worked for a time at Curves.
In December 2007, after Frank’s death, she moved with her son Jim to Hood River, Ore.,, to live closer to her daughters and their families. She loved Oregon and Hood River, and quickly made many wonderful friendships.
She was a member of Hood River Valley Christian Church; the Celilo Chapter of the DAR; the Red Hat Society; and a volunteer at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital. Thanks to her dear friend and neighbor Beverly Carpenter, she also rekindled her love for playing bridge.
Beryl was known for her faith, loving smile and kindness. She was a special lady and will be missed by many.
Beryl is survived by her sons Mike and Joe; her daughters Becky and Theresa; and her grandchildren: Erik, Nikole, Timothy, Kyle, Kaitlyn, Stephen and Phillip.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Frank, and son Jim.
A memorial service celebrating Beryl’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at Hood River Valley Christian Church, 975 Indian Creek Road, Hood River. Arrangements are under the direction of Anderson’s Tribute Center (Funerals, Receptions, Cremations), 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River, OR 97031; 541-386-1000.
