Elizabeth “Betty” Jean Jackson
May 4, 1924 - December 14, 2009
Elizabeth “Betty” Jean Jackson was born at home in Central Montana near Lewistown on May 4, 1924. Her parents homesteaded there, and she grew up on a ranch with two brothers and a sister, all of whom came to eventually live in the Hood River Valley.
It was on the ranch that Betty developed her love of animals, the outdoors and growing things. She died peacefully in her sleep on Dec. 14, 2009, at the Oregon Veterans’ Home in The Dalles, Ore., at age 85.
After high school, Betty traveled with a girlfriend all over the United States. During World War II, she worked in a munitions factory assembling shells.
She later moved to Hood River to be closer to family and it was then that she met Gene and they married in 1946.
She was always active in the youth activities programs, being a Camp Fire Girls leader and helping with junior bowling and junior golf programs.
She worked as a bookkeeper, escrow agent and legal secretary.
The joys of her life were her family, her pets (she thought of them as members of the family) and her flower gardens, especially her roses.
She enjoyed her friends, big family dinners, playing bridge, golfing, and picnics in the many parks around the valley.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Jackson; her parents; her sister, Mable Recksiek; brothers Bob Brown and John Brown; and her grandson Randy Losli.
She is survived by her only daughter, Patty Jackson Losli, and son-in-law, Bob Losli; and nine nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life is planned for spring 2010. Those wishing to make a donation may do so to Hospice of the Gorge in her name. They gave her wonderful care during the last months of her life as did all the staff at Oregon Veterans’ Home, and the family thanks them very much.
Arrangements are under the direction of Anderson’s Tribute Center (Funerals, Receptions, Cremations), 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River, OR 97031; 541-386-1000. Please visit www.andersonstributecenter.com to sign the family guest book.
