Irene (Ordway Woodley) Brooks died Dec. 25, 2008, in The Dalles, Ore. She was born Sept. 10, 1916, in Hood River, Ore., to Earl and Pearl (Blaylock) Ordway, the third of six surviving children and the only daughter.
Irene was raised and educated in Hood River, graduating from Hood River High School. She attended Simpson College and graduated from Western Washington State University in Bellingham with a degree in elementary education.
She married the Rev. James Robert Woodley Sept. 7, 1948. While they were married, he served churches in Elma, McCleary, Mabton, and Walla Walla, Wash., and Wamic and Bend, Ore.; and she taught in those communities. They had one daughter, Priscilla. They were married 14 years before he died suddenly on Aug. 31, 1963.
Irene married Paul Brooks on Dec. 23, 1964. They resided in Mosier where Paul owned and operated an orchard and she taught first grade at Mosier School. For many years they lived in a longtime Brooks family home that is now the Cherry Hill B&B. They were members of the Mosier Grange and attended the Christian Church in Mosier and The Dalles.
Paul died on July 22, 2007, after 42 years of marriage.
Irene enjoyed reading, sewing, needlework, flower gardening, music, and church and community activities. She was a wonderful hostess who loved to have house guests, give dinner parties and celebrate holidays with festive meals for family and friends.
Irene is survived by her daughter, Priscilla Ordway Woodley, of Beaverton, Ore.; special niece-in-law, Shirley Bagge, and her husband, Rob, of Mosier, Ore., along with their children, Lorraine and Nic Sherman, and their daughter, Katie Brooks, of Independence, Ore., and Geneva and Jeremy Nygren and their children, Anna and Erik, of Aviano, Italy; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for her will be held on Saturday, Feb. 21, at 11 a.m. at the First Christian Church in The Dalles. Following the service, there will be a luncheon at 12:30 p.m. at the Mosier Grange Hall.
