Fredrick M. (Mert) Hayman, 94, passed away at his home in Hood River, Ore., on Feb. 19, 2009. He was born in Calais, Maine, Dec. 12, 1914.
Mert worked in the cotton mills in New Bedford, Mass., during the Depression. His aunt and uncle brought him to Clatskanie, Ore., where he finished high school. He attended Oregon State College and graduated in 1939.
He worked for the Columbia River Log Scaling and Grading Bureau for more than 40 years.
Mert lived in Hood River from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. He returned to Hood River in 1992.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Gale, in 1966, and his wife, Evelyn, in 1984. He is survived by his son, Bill, and daughter-in-law, Bonnie; two grandsons, Larry and Lyle, and Lyle’s wife, Sandra, and their children, Evan and Marilyn.
Mert was well-known and respected in the timber industry on the Columbia River and in much of Oregon and Washington.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Remembrances should go to Heart of Hospice, 1020 Wasco St., Ste. C, Hood River, OR 97031.
