Damon Louis Holmes, 53, a Hood River, Ore., resident, died July 10, 2009, at his home with family by his side.
A service to celebrate his life will be Saturday, July 18, at 3 p.m. at Anderson’s Tribute Center. A reception will follow.

Damon was born May 31, 1956, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Ken Holmes and Patricia (Barnes) Best. He lived in Vermillion, S.D., then Yakima, Wash., coming to Hood River when he was in the sixth grade.
He graduated from Hood River Valley High School in 1975 where he met and then married his high school sweetheart, Kelly McGee, on Oct. 20, 1979, and they were blessed with two boys, Jesse and Tony.
Damon loved birds, camping, fishing, whitewater rafting, gardening and animals of all kinds; but above all he loved being with family and friends. He loved and was very proud of his three grandchildren: Connor, Evan and Angela.
Damon worked for Hood River Distillers for 23 years and then for Turtle Island Foods. He was fond of all of his co-workers.
Damon was a kind-hearted soul who would do anything for anyone. He also was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, son, son-in-law, stepson, uncle, great uncle, friend and co-worker. He touched everyone he knew with his big heart and big smile.
He is survived and will be truly missed by his wife of 30 years, Kelly L. Holmes; sons Jesse Holmes of Hood River and Tony Holmes and Heather Widmer, of Hood River; grandchildren Connor, Evan and Angela, of Hood River; sisters Conni Andersen and her husband, Howard, of Underwood, Wash., Chris Castilla and her husband, Joe, of Canby, Ore., and Lisa Holmes Bentz, of Canby, Ore.; brothers Jim Holmes and his wife, Jill, of Hood River, and Erik Holmes and his wife, Laurie, of Hood River; sisters-in-law Maron Bartell and her husband, Mike, and Robyn Wach and her husband, Greg; stepfather Glenn Best, of Hood River; mother- and father-in-law Sharon and Robert McGee; nieces and nephews Scott, Shad, Crystel, Michael, Marisa, Blake, Samantha, Shelly, Amy, Matt, Nick, Michelle and Matt; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth Holmes and Patricia Best.
