Aloysius “Al” Francis Nowik

Aloysius Francis “Al” Nowik passed away at Mid Columbia Medical Center in The Dalles, Ore., on July 20, 2009. Al and his wife, Lorraine, had been living in Gearhart, Ore., for many years and just recently moved to Hood River, Ore.
Al was born Aug. 11, 1922, in Dickson City, Penn., to Anthony and Antoinette (Trecoske) Nowik. He grew up on a farm in Montrose, Penn., where he enjoyed roaming the woods and fishing, hunting and exploring nature.
On Jan. 8, 1948, in Montrose he married Lorraine Phyllis Hornbeck and to this union were blessed seven children. The family farmed in Montrose, then moved to Florida, which was a big mistake; and then moved to Port Jervis, N.Y., and later from New York to Hood River, Ore. They called Hood River home for many years before moving to Lincoln City, Seaside and Gearhart.
In addition to farming Al was head maintenance for St. Mary’s in Port Jervis, N.Y. He was a man of all trades and afraid of none. Al was also a gifted writer and has written beautiful poetry.
Al is survived and will be dearly missed by his wife of 61 years, Lorraine Phyllis Nowik, of Hood River; six children, Christina A. Kean, of Port Jervis, N.Y., Anthony S. Nowik, of Vancouver, Wash., Anita R. Holland, of Vancouver, Wash., Michelle Himes, of Hood River, Phyllis Renfro, of Vancouver, Wash., and Janice Brooks, of White Salmon, Wash.
He is also survived by grandchildren Anthony J. Nowik, Tracy T. Nowik, Edward W. Fuller, Serena Johnson Heimbeigner, Anna Grace Weaver, Alex Johnson, Tyler Renfro, Zachery Renfro, Christopher Brooks, Holley Brooks, Misty Brooks, Dale Brooks and Ryan Kean; great-grandchildren Hailey D. Nowik, Dallas A. Nowick, Bradley A. Nowik, Nathan Nowik, Autymn M. Novik, Levi Fuller, Ashley Fuller, Skyla Murray, Paul Fuller, Erin Kean, Emily Kean, Riley Kean, Sarah Kean, Grady Kean, Isaiah Weaver, Auzy Weaver, Zane Weaver, Caleb Heimbigner, Tessa Heimbigner and Jace Heimbigner; a great-great-grandchild, Nevaeh; and sister-in-law, Elizabeth “Betty” Hornbeck, of Binghampton, N.Y.
Al leaves a legacy and will be missed by all. In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in death by a daughter at birth.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 25, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1501 Belmont Ave., Hood River, with interment to follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Rosary and vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Anderson’s Tribute Center.
