Herschel Elwood Harvey Jr. passed away at his home at Down Manor in Hood River, Ore., on Oct. 19, 2009. Herschel, “Harv” to some and “Popeye” to his grandchildren, was born Oct. 22, 1927, in Sioux City, Iowa, to his parents, Herschel Harvey Sr. and Nellie Mae Harvey.
Herschel joined the Air Force in 1945. He was stationed in Paris, France, where he met and married his lovely French wife, Yvonne, Sept. 15, 1951. During his time in the military, Herschel spent a year in Iceland and a year in Greenland.
The family also lived in Japan, Greece and France and eventually settled in Montgomery, Ala., where Herschel retired from the military and joined the civil service.
After living in the south for more than 20 years, Herschel and Yvonne followed their children, Marc and Jacqueline, to the Pacific Northwest where they built a house on a mountaintop near the Snowden area of White Salmon, Wash.
Delightfully nicknamed “Mémé’s Mountain,” this became the place for numerous happy family times spent together with Popeye, Mémé, children and their grandchildren: Prescott and Reed Harvey and Madeleine and Zoé Newbold.
Herschel was passionate about sailing, bowling, reading, computers and coin collecting. While living in Pensacola, Fla., he was often sailing his cherished sailboat. He was a valued member of many bowling leagues, where he made many close friends. He also loved nature, wildlife and the outdoors.
He is survived by his wife, son, daughter, four grandchildren and his sister, LaNelle Sherrill, of Colorado.
We will miss our Popeye immensely.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Nov. 7 at 1 p.m. at Providence Down Manor, 1950 Sterling Place, Hood River.
