July 13, 1920 - September 23, 2009
Jessie Curtis, 89, a resident of Hood River, Ore., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, at her residence, surrounded by her family. Jessie was born July 13, 1920, to Walter and Elizabeth Jane Forrest.
While working as a colonel’s assistant in the British Army, she met her future husband, Robert Curtis, and on July 6, 1945, they married in Glasgow, Scotland.
After the war, they made a home for themselves in Nobel, Canada, and within the next six years, her three daughters were born. The family moved to the United States and lived in Virginia and California.
For more than 30 years, Jessie worked as a bookkeeper and secretary in the aircraft industry. She lived for the weekends when she could escape with her family to the beach, enjoy cheeseburgers and chili-cheese nachos, and relax with a good romance novel.
Bob and Jessie loved to travel and cruise all over the world: Russia, Scandinavia, India and the Orient. In 1996, she and Bob relocated to the Hood River area, where they would settle into their retirement years.
Jessie was a quiet spirit and felt the most at-home in the kitchen. It was a special treat to receive her Christmas gift of homemade shortbread, made with love.
Jessie was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years in 2001. She is survived by her daughters, Linda Sanders, of Hood River, Brenda Buskirk and her husband, Richard, of Yorba Linda, Calif., and Marlene Spain and her husband, Michael, of Oregon City.
Also surviving are five grandchildren: Brandie Hogg, Heather Beam, Chad Yopp and Tawny and Crystal Spain; and five great-grandchildren: Taylor, Drew, Ethan, Lauren and Chase.
The family requests that contributions be made in her honor to Hospice of the Gorge in care of Anderson’s Tribute Center (Funerals, Receptions, Cremations), 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River, OR 97031; 541-386-1000. Please visit www.andersonstributecenter.com to leave a condolence note for family.
