George Harrison Kahler
August 28, 1919 - November 30, 2010
George Harrison Kahler passed away at his Hood River, Ore., home Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010. George was born Aug. 28, 1919, in South Junction, Ore., the second of two children to Lenora Robinson and James Roosevelt Kahler.
He was cared for by his grandfather and a maiden aunt, Beryl Robinson, for the first five years on their homestead near Criteron, Ore. In 1924 they moved by horse and wagon to Salem, Ore., where he grew up.
George enlisted in the Air Force shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii in 1942 and spent three years in the South Pacific. After his discharge in 1945, George took an apprenticeship in carpentry working as a journeyman carpenter for various contractors in Salem, Ore., and Pullman, Wash.
On Aug. 17, 1951, he married Doris Cole in Colfax, Wash. Three children were born to this union: James, Gregory and Dorothy. James died in 1967 from complications brought on muscular dystrophy. Gregory also died, in 1976, from complications of muscular dystrophy. George’s sister, Jessie Darrar, died in 1980 from cancer.
George worked as a school custodian in Pullman, Wash., Yamhill, Ore., and in White Salmon, Wash. He worked for the National Guard Armory in Hood River in maintenance and repair for 12 years before retiring in 1981.
He worked for several people after he retired, doing building or repair. He also worked for the Hood River County School District as a substitute custodian for five years.
George was an avid gardener, with flowers being put first, but much garden produce was enjoyed by friends and neighbors. He always worked hard to provide for his family; always improving any house they lived in. He moved his family often if he felt they would have a better situation to enjoy.
George and Doris loved to go on trips with their RV and dog. They enjoyed the coast of Oregon the most, especially at Bandon. They had great trips to Canada and across the States.
George is survived by his wife, Doris, of Hood River; daughter Dorothy Lambert, of The Dalles, Ore.; and cousins, nieces and nephews and their families.
Memorial services will be held at Anderson’s Tribute Center at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 10; Oscar Stenberg III will officiate. Interment at the Klickitat County Cemetery beside his two sons will follow at a later date.
Donations may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association or the First Baptist Church.
