Donald Robert “Don” McIntee passed away Nov. 13, 2010, at the Oregon State Veterans’ Home in The Dalles, Ore. Don was born to Edward and Minnie McIntee, at Portal, N.D., on May 15, 1923.
The last survivor of nine children, Don grew up on a farm in North Dakota. At age 19, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, becoming a flight engineer on a B-17 bomber. Don enjoyed telling how he had been to places like Calcutta and the Suez Canal at a very young age.
After the war, Don spent many years in the Northwest, settling in Hood River, Ore., working as a home-improvement contractor. In 2006, because of health needs, Don moved to the Oregon Veterans’ Home in The Dalles. Staff there became like an extended family to him.
While there, he was selected to fly again, this time as a passenger, in a restored military jet. After the flight, Don said it was just as much fun as 65 years ago!
Don is survived by his daughter, Vicki; longtime close friends Betty Smith and Sumio “Soup” Fukui; and several nieces and nephews.
At Don’s request there will be cremation and no funeral. His final resting place will be Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore.
