Lloyd Ray German U.S. Veteran

Lloyd Ray German died on Dec. 12, 2010, at his home in Hood River, Ore., at the age of 86.
Lloyd was born on Sept. 30, 1924, to Cyril Ray German and Helena Fries German in Summerville, Ore. He attended Pleasant Grove Grade School and graduated from Imbler High School in 1943, where he played baseball.
He joined the military in 1943, serving both in the Navy and the Marines. He was proud to be a World War II veteran. After his discharge he started farming in the Summerville area.
Lloyd married Lee Woodell in Nevada on April 3, 1948, and they had two daughters. She preceded him in death in 1984.
He went to work for the USDA, ASDS office in 1956 as a field representative, moving up to county director in 1957. In 1979 with the move to Hood River he became a district director with nine counties under his supervision.
Lloyd married Connie McClure in Hood River on Oct. 17, 1990.
He became an avid golfer after his retirement in January 1986, along with his other hobbies of gardening, hunting and fishing.
Lloyd is survived by his wife, Connie, of Hood River, Ore.; daughters Sue (Dan) Gruis, of Salem, Ore., and Chris (Denny) Houston, of Sheridan, Ore.; sister, Fran Zander, of Salem, Ore.; six granddaughters: Teri, Melissa, Shelly, Candie, Robyn and Jenni; grandson, Brent; and nine great-grandchildren.
With his marriage to Connie he is also survived her family that he was proud to call his own: stepchildren Anna Schwebke, of Hood River, Cinda Hogan, of Maple Valley, Wash., and Jim McClure, of LaGrande, Ore.; five step-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren, three nieces and three nephews.
In addition to his parents and first wife, Lloyd was preceded in death by a sister, June Livermore, and brother, Claire German.
A potluck reception and celebration of Lloyd’s life is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, at the Hood River Valley Adult Center, 2010 Sterling Place, Hood River.
