Leon “Whitie” McNeill passed away July 12, 2010, at the age of 88. He was born in Armona, Calif., on June 13, 1922, to James and Jessie McNeill.
Leon grew up in California. He later married Ina Bell Brown and moved to the Hood River, Ore., area in 1947. He logged for many years and raised five children in the community of Dee Flat.
Leon greatly enjoyed fishing and hunting with his brothers and children. He spent the latter part of his life working on his son’s farm. While on the farm, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow up and participated in many harvests.
Leon is survived by his son Garry and his wife, Dorothy, of Coulterville, Calif., son Ron and his wife, Judy, of Hood River, and Harlan Gene and his wife, Alice, of Hillsboro, Ore.; and daughter Patricia Allen, of Portland, Ore. Leon is also survived by his many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as his sisters June Woodruff, of California, Iona Wonsyld, of Hood River, and Cleta Elliot, of Hood River; and brother, Melvin McNeill, of California.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Carol Noakes, father James McNeill, mother Jessie McNeill, brothers Doyle, James, Ellis “Bud,” Gerald and Jim, and sister Vera McNeill.
Leon was a kindhearted and private man and at his request there will be no formal service.
