Archille Jean Menard, of Hood River, passed away in a Portland care facility May 11, 2010. He was born May 13, 1951, in St. Mary’s Hospital, San Francisco, Calif., to Dorothy Brown Menard and Archille (Arch) John Menard. Dorothy was a well-known realtor who passed away two years ago in Newport, Ore., where she and Jean were living when she retired.
Jean graduated from high school in Los Gatos, Calif., and received his Bachelor of Arts in geology from San Diego State University. He was an avid environmentalist who loved hiking in the Gorge and being a part of organizations such as the Hood River Valley Residents Committee.
A voracious reader, he used the library extensively to read about the world affairs, his geological pursuits and the environmental concerns.
He is survived by is first cousins: Mareen Bass, Patricia Morrison, Barbara Bass, Rosemary Barzee, all of Montrose, Colo., and Cathy Crabb, Cayman Islands. His local friends include Jean Harmon, paul Randall, Joan Gerhardt, Dale and Lucy Hill, Jim and Geneil Hammermeister, Elizabeth English, the dialysis staff at Providence Hood river Memorial Hospital, residents of Dethman Manor, the Hood River “Men’s Group” and various members of the Hood River Valley Residents Committee.
A memorial potluck will be held at Wakeena Falls picnic area, just west of Multnomah Falls, Sunday, June 6, at 1 p.m. Please bring something to share and picnic utensils.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Friends of the Hood River County Library, mailed or delivered to the Hood River County Library, 502 State St., Hood River, OR 97031 before closure June 30.
