Monica Perfield

May 9, 1910 - March 8, 2010

Monica Perfield passed away March 8, 2010, at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital two months short of her 100th birthday.
She was born May 9, 1910, in Buckley, Wash., to Henry and Julia (Mullins) Perfield and was one of three daughters. She was raised in Puyallup, Wash., but along with her sisters she went to St. Mary’s Academy High School in Portland, Ore.
After graduation, Monica attended North Pacific Dental College in Portland, becoming a registered pharmacist in 1930 — one of the few women in Oregon at that time to accomplish such an honor. As she was not yet 21, she was too young to practice, so she went to the University of Washington for two quarters.
In 1931, with her Aunt Min Perfield, she bought what became Perfield Pharmacy at 82nd and N.E. Sandy Boulevard in Portland. Monica operated the business until 1951, when she and her sister, Margaret, opened “The Drug Store” in Parkdale, Ore.
It is not known how long they operated that business before selling it, but in the 1980s she worked part-time in Hood River at Barclay’s Pharmacy on the Hood River Heights. She retired her pharmacist license in 1986.
She and Margaret traveled extensively, including an around-the-world tour of archeological sites in 2000 when they were both in their 90s.
Her parents and stepmother preceded her in death, as did her two sisters, Kathleen and Margaret. None of the Perfield sisters married.
She is survived by several grown children of cousins, including Richard Johnson, of Depoe Bay, Ore.
Holy Mass of the Resurrection is planned for 10 a.m. Monday, March 15, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Ron Maag officiating. A reception will immediately follow and then interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Anderson’s Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River, OR 97031; 541-386-1000. Leave a note of condolence for her family at www.andersonstributecenter.com.
