Clara Elizabeth “Liz” (Whited) Wood, 76, passed away Sept. 23, 2010, in the Hood River Care Center in Hood River, Ore., after a brave battle with Alzheimer’s. Liz was born Nov. 16, 1933, delivered by her father in their home at Unity, Ore.
The youngest of six girls, Liz had a certain charm with animals from a very young age.
Liz attended the South Fork School in Unity, later graduating from Baker High School in 1951, where she met Sylvester (Ves) Wood. They were married in First Lutheran Church in Baker. They spent over 40 happy years together.
Liz and Ves were blessed with three children; and Liz spent much of their upbringing as a single mother while Ves pursued a military career. She was very involved with her kids’ activities, which included 4-H and athletics.
In 1970, Ves accepted a job as foreman of the cabinet department for Krieg Millwork in Hood River, and the family relocated to Odell.
Liz was active on the women’s bowling teams in the valley, as well as a very dedicated gardener. She and Ves would do crossword puzzles daily, oftentimes solving them in pencil and erasing the answers so the other could have a chance. There was many a night where Ves and Liz could be found around their beautiful round oak table playing cards with family and friends.
After Ves passed in 1993, Liz remained in the family home, continuing to garden, do the crosswords and watch her soaps, all the while enjoying visits from her family. As her health declined she took residence at the Hood River Care Center.
All those who knew Liz knew of her kindness, her unwavering smile, her contagious laughter and her love of family. She was fiery and fearless, and at all of 100 pounds could stop anyone in their tracks.
She remained positive throughout her life, even at the end as she battled Alzheimer’s disease with that same spirit.
She is survived by Karen and Leonard Aubert, of Parkdale, David and Chae Wood of Odell and John and Jodi Wood, of Hood River. She will be greatly missed by grandchildren Paul and Lindsay Aubert of Parkdale, Jolene Aubert of Spokane, Katie Wood of Odell, Bobby Wood of Beaverton and Sarah Wood of Corvallis, as well as great-grandsons Jess and Gage Aubert, of Parkdale.
She is also survived by her oldest sister, Betty Jean Erwin, of Fairfield, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mattie Ellen White Whited and Wilson Mathew Whited; her four sisters, Anna Belle Bare, Mary Christine Rich, LaRena Grace Vandecar and Ora Mae Thomason; and her loving husband, Ves.
Graveside services for Clara Elizabeth Wood will be held at the Upper Valley Cemetery in Parkdale, Ore., on Sunday, Nov. 14, at 1 p.m. Lunch and celebration of her life following at Leonard and Karen Aubert’s home, 6950 Highway 35, Mt. Hood, Ore. All family and friends are welcome.
