Yukie Sato passed away on Nov. 18, 2010. She was born in Portland, Ore., on Aug. 20, 1920, to Ritsuji and Harue Akiyama. The Akiyamas operated a Japanese merchandise store in Portland.
She attended schools in Portland. She was interned in the Portland Assembly Center and Minidoka Relocation Center with her family from 1942 through 1944.
Yukie married Katsumi Sato in 1948, a marriage that lasted 62 years. She was a housewife, a strawberry grower and worked for a time at the Hood River Safeway. She was an accomplished cook and taught Japanese and Chinese cooking.
Yukie loved animals. She raised chickens, a saddle horse and many different dogs.
She is survived by her brother, Hanji Akiyama, and nephews Ron, Randy and Rick Kusunose and nephews Robert and Steve Akiyama.
Private interment was at Idlewilde Cemetery.
