Margaret “Peggy” Elizabeth Beekman
October 28, 1917 - December 5, 2011
Margaret "Peggy" Elizabeth Beekman was born Oct. 28, 1917, in Tacoma, Wash., to Robert and Margaret Dargan. She was the middle child of seven and the only girl in a large Irish Catholic family. She passed away at the Hood River Care Center in Hood River, Ore., from congestive heart failure on Dec. 5, 2011, at the age of 94.
After graduating from high school, Peggy worked in a variety of office positions in Seattle, Hollywood and San Francisco. While working in Hollywood, Peggy gave rides to a co-worker named Roy to their jobs at Abbey Rents. Her co-worker later worked in the film industry using the name Rock Hudson.
It was in San Francisco that she met and married Paul Beekman in 1950. They had one daughter, Kim Elizabeth, and were married until 1964, when Paul met an untimely death.
Peggy moved to Grants Pass, Ore., shortly afterwards and lived there until she returned to Tacoma in 1973 to care for her mother. After retiring in 1983, she moved to Hood River to be near her daughter and grandchildren, Paul and Amy Horsell.
Peggy loved Morgan horses and bought her first horse at the age of 19. Later, she owned several other Morgans and was active in the Siskiyou Morgan Horse Club in Grants Pass.
After earning her broker's license in 1965, she sold real estate and bought and sold mortgages until she moved to Hood River. She was an avid crossword puzzle enthusiast and worked a puzzle every day until her sight prevented it. She also enjoyed sitting on her front porch and visiting with her neighbors.
Peggy is survived by her daughter, Kim, and son-in-law, John Vogel; her grandson and his wife, Paul and Corrina Horsell, of Portland, Ore.; granddaughter Amy Horsell, of Gresham, Ore.; step-granddaughter Jennifer (Vogel) and son-in-law, Steve Anselment, of Spanaway, Wash.; great-granddaughters Savanah Horsell, Delia Horsell and Emily and Madison Anselment; and great-grandson Robert Anselment.
She was predeceased by her husband and six brothers.
A celebration of life will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at the Idlewilde Cemetery. Father Ron Maag and Bob Huskey will officiate.
