Lester “Les” Shields

August 26, 1942 - December 24, 2011

Lester "Les" Shields passed away on Dec. 24, 2011, in Hood River, Ore., at the age of 69 from pulmonary fibrosis. Lester was born Aug. 26, 1942, in Bend, Ore., to Lester and Rachel Worthen Shields. He arrived in the Hood River Valley in November of 1943.

Les grew up in Hood River and started work at Safeway in 1958 while still in high school. He graduated from Wy'east High School in 1960.

After 45 years of service, Les retired as Hood River Safeway's meat department manager in 2002. He attended and was a member of First Baptist Church. He made many friends throughout the years within Safeway, the church and our community.

This year Les and Teresa "Terri" Sherrell celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They were blessed with two daughters, Marla and Jill. The family enjoyed taking vacations together. Among their travels were several trips they made to visit relatives in Canada as well as memorable trips to Disneyland, Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon.

Les was an avid bowler over the years and added golf as a new adventure after retirement. In addition to bowling and golfing, Les enjoyed camping, fishing and crabbing at the coast with his family and friends. Winchester Bay held a special place in Les' heart.

He is survived by his wife, Terri, of Hood River; daughter Marla Frederick of Mill City, Ore.; mother, Rachel, of Hood River; brothers Dave of Gresham, Ore., and Tim of Waldport, Ore.; sisters Pamela of Portland, Ore., and Karmel, of Olympia, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lester "Jack," and his daughter Jill.

A Celebration of Life for Les will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30, at First Baptist Church, 1889 Belmont Drive, Hood River. Interment will follow at Mt. View Cemetery. Viewing will be held on Thursday, Dec. 29, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Anderson's Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River.

Memorials can be made in memory of Les to Heart of Hospice, Hood River, or First Baptist Church, Hood River.
