Sylvia Irene Hahn

February 15, 1919 - June 12, 2011

Sylvia Irene Hahn, 92, a longtime Hood River resident, passed away June 12, 2011, at Providence Brookside Manor, where she had lived for the past five years. Sylvia's family is very appreciative of the care and compassion Brookside provided.

Sylvia was born Feb. 15, 1919, in Sumner, Neb., to Charlie Eugene and Buelah Isabel (Guessford) Scranton. She grew up in Nebraska and graduated from Sumner High School. In 1939 at the age of 20 she moved from Nebraska to Hood River, Ore.

On Aug. 17, 1942, she married Russ Hahn and they were blessed with two daughters, Joanne and Jeanne. She worked for Sche's Jewelry Store downtown from 1942-45. Russ passed away in 2002.

Sylvia was an active member of Riverside Community Church and our community, where she volunteered countless hours for many organizations. She was Riverside's Church Woman of the Year, she helped with FISH food bank, Gorge Ecumenical Church Ministries and was the Hood River Woman of the Year in 1975, a past president of the American Legion Auxiliary with special interest in projects for children, youth, girls state and veterans services.

Sylvia is survived by her daughters, Jeanne Stover and her husband, Bob, of Cathedral City, Calif., and Joanne Holt and her husband, Tom, of Hood River, Ore.; three grandchildren, Peter Downing and his wife, Maddy, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Regan Carpenter and her husband, Danny, of Fountain, Calif., and Wendy Holt, of Portland, Ore.; and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Sylvia was preceded in death by a brother, Bob Scranton, and sister, Ruth Mohr.

She enjoyed many happy times with "The Ladies Who Lunched."

A service to honor and remember Sylvia is planned for 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, at Riverside Community Church, Fourth and State streets, Hood River.

Memorials may be made in Sylvia's name to either Riverside Community Church, Providence Hospice of the Gorge, the American Cancer Society or the American Red Cross.
