Janet Irene Cook

September 28, 1943 - March 10, 2011

Janet Irene Pemberton Cousins Cook, 67, a longtime resident of Hawaii, late of Scappoose, Ore., died March 10, 2011, Thursday, at her brother's home.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 9, 11 a.m. Service will be at St. Aiden's Episcopal Church, 17405 N.E. Glisan St., Portland, Ore., followed by a reception.

Janet was born on Sept. 28, 1943, in Portland, Ore. She was the only child born to Philip and Audrey (Reid) Pemberton. She was raised in the Broadway District with her grandparents, until the age of 7.

She moved with her mother and adoptive father, Wesley Cousins, to Eugene, Ore., until 1955, when the family moved to Lake Oswego, Ore. Here Janet attended Lake Oswego High School and graduated with the Class of 1960. She attended Willamette University and San Francisco State College. Janet attained a master's degree in ESL later on in her life at the University of Hawaii.

Janet was a teacher and also viewed life as a teacher and life-long learner. Her 40 years of teaching included diverse populations, both ethnically and elementary through graduate students.

She taught in Marin County, Calif., schools, in Hood River schools, in the Reynolds school district, at the University of Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific University. She also taught in American Samoa and Mexico. She retired in 2006 specializing in ESL.

Janet loved life; she was a forward thinker, a pioneer and a passionate person. She was an outdoor enthusiast - she enjoyed body surfing, snow skiing, kayaking, scuba diving and hiking. These adventures took Janet to faraway places where she got to meet new people and view new cultures. She enjoyed traveling and made friends everywhere.

She was a gifted singer and piano and pipe organ player; she belonged to St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral, Queen Emma Square, Honolulu. She would often sketch, work crossword puzzles, read literature and enjoy the moment. Janet was a great friend and had many great friends around her.

She is preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her three half-siblings and their spouses: Barbara and Gordon Hilton of Jefferson, Ore., Scott and Mary Beth Cousins of Scappoose, Ore., and Elin and Mike Hayes of Vernonia, Ore.; and three nieces and five nephews. Survivors on her Pemberton side include her Aunt Margaret Pemberton Fisher of Salem, Ore. She is also survived by her beloved cat, Molokai.

The family suggests donations in Janet's name to OHSU Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute, The Nature Conservancy or to the charity of your choice.
