Robert “Bob” H. Stein U.S. Veteran

April 9, 1928 - May 11, 2011

Robert (Bob) H. Stein, 83, a longtime resident of La Grande, Ore., died at the Oregon Veterans Home in The Dalles, Ore., May 11, 2011.

Bob was the only boy of seven children born to Herman and Jesse Stein in La Grande, Ore., on April 9, 1928.

Bob graduated from La Grande High School in 1946. He enlisted in the army and was stationed in Korea with the criminal investigation division.

Following his honorable discharge he returned to La Grande, married his high school sweetheart, Betty Ann Van Blokland, in 1948 and began his college education at Eastern Oregon College. He transferred to Oregon State University where he received his degree in fish and game management in 1953.

Bob's love of the outdoors was a perfect fit for his 30-year career with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. For the first 15 years of his career he lived in Enterprise, Ore. During this time he and Betty had three sons and made many lifelong friendships.

He, Betty and the boys often traveled and camped throughout Wallowa County enjoying wildlife, sometimes counting animals and plant life. He, along with his family and friends spent summer months hiking, swimming and boating at Wallowa Lake.

Bob and his family moved to Beaverton, Ore., in 1966 when he was promoted to the main office in Portland, Ore., retiring from Oregon Fish and Wildlife in 1984.

Bob and Betty wished to spend their retirement years in La Grande where they had grown up, and moved back to the valley in 1987. Bob enjoyed hunting, traveling with his family and friends and going for long drives with Betty around Union and Wallowa counties.

Betty passed away February 2008. Bob moved to Hood River, Ore., to be close to his family in October 2009.

Bob is survived by his children Marc Stein and Andy Alcala, of Portland, Ore.; Kirk and Barb Stein, of Hood River, Ore., and Eric and Andrea Stein, of Boise, Idaho; two grandchildren, Jessica Stein and Tyler Stein, both of Boise, Idaho; and his sisters, Margaret, Ethel and Wanda.

A service to honor Bob is planned for 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, at Island City Cemetery, 11003 S. McAlister Road, Island City, Ore. Family friend and celebrant speaker Bob Huskey will officiate.

Military rites will be performed by the Oregon Honors Team. A reception and time of fellowship will follow at The Island City-City Hall Building, 10605 Island Ave., Island City, Ore.
