James Thomas Fitzgerald, 88, passed away in the Oregon Veterans Home in The Dalles, Ore., Nov. 12, 2011. Thomas was born in Grove, Okla., the son of Sarah (Dowd) and Patrick Fitzgerald on Jan. 7, 1923.
He moved to Hood River, Ore., in 1941 and married Theda (Jackie) Loe on June 11, 1942. He enlisted and served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1943-1946.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Theda (Jackie) Fitzgerald; his grandchildren Roger Dority and Roxanne Dority; his brother, Emmett Fitzgerald, and sisters Anna Morgan and Katherine Kadera; and nephew, James Morgan.
He is survived by his present wife, Martha Fitzgerald; daughters Mary Dale Houston and Carrol Arthur; grandchildren Sean Houston and Kelly Bukaty; great-grandchildren Anna Houston, Ragan Bukaty and Quinn Bukaty; niece Jackie Flood and nephews Gerald Morgan and William Morgan.
He worked construction on many of the dams, tunnels and highways along the Columbia River prior to retiring in 1985. He enjoyed gardening, gunsmithing, American history and most of all his friends throughout the valley.
Interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery.
