Lewis “Lou” Harold Wixon U.S. Veteran

July 22, 1939 - November 17, 2011

Lewis (Lou) Harold Wixon, 72, passed away Nov. 17, 2011, at his home in The Dalles, Ore., surrounded by family. Lou was born July 22, 1939, in Rock Island, Ill., to Margaret Anne Minear and Arlo Edmond Wixon. The family moved to Denver, Colo., in 1940 and then to Albany, N.Y. in 1945.

In 1946 they moved to Longview, Wash., where he spent his youth with four brothers and two sisters who shared life, love and laughter.

He served our country proudly for three years beginning in 1959; U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne, All Americans, and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal for honorable and faithful service.

On March 9, 1980, Lou married Jo Ann Tenney. Following their hearts and careers they lived in the states of Hawaii, Utah, Wyoming, Oregon, Washington and Alaska. He worked, played, loved life and shoveled a lot of snow.

Lou took great pride in helping others achieve their goals to succeed in life. He was one of the "good guys" and never turned anyone away in time of need.

Lou dearly loved life with his family, friends and nature, and boating and fishing in Resurrection Bay, Alaska, the rivers of Oregon, Washington and Utah, and particularly the mighty Columbia River. He was both interesting and interested.

Lou is survived by his wife, Jo Ann; daughter Melissa and Ken Era of Longview, Wash., Shirlee and Frank Lewis of Kalama, Wash., Sally Davidson of Longview, Wash., and David and Chris Wixon, of Port Hadlock, Wash., and many, many nieces and nephews; Barbara and Mitch Hosford of Hood River, Ore., Michael and Val Tenney of The Dalles, Raymond and Barbara Buchheit, of Hood River, Ore., Greg and Mylene Walden, of Hood River, Ore., Bob and Connie Walden, of The Dalles, and Bill Walden.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Anne Minear Wixon Bacon; father, Arlo Edmond Wixon; stepfather, Lyle Bacon; son Matthew Wixon, and brothers Donald Wixon, Jerry Wixon and Arlo Wixon.

Memorials in Lou's name will be gratefully accepted by The Dalles Area Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 378, The Dalles, OR 97058.

A memorial service to honor Lou is planned for 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 28, at St. Paul's Chapel, 601 Union St., The Dalles. Graveside rites will follow at Idlewilde Cemetery in Hood River.
