Janice Mae "Jan" Brooks Kaufman passed away on July 22, 2012, at her home in Hood River, Ore. Jan was born on March 6, 1935, in Portland, Ore, to Ralph and Nellie (Bergman) Brooks. She graduated from Franklin High School and worked as a dental assistant.
Jan returned to school where she earned a master’s degree in speech pathology from Portland State University. She completed her career as a speech pathologist in the Columbia Gorge Education Service District, retiring in 1997.
In her retirement Jan was active with the Oregon Retired Educators Association and 4-H, the Saddle Pals horse club. All her life Jan was an avid outdoors woman: hiking, skiing, climbing, golfing, snow shoeing and riding. Having lived a full life, Jan is survived by a large family and friends who have supported her independent spirit.
A memorial is planned for Saturday, Aug. 11, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Mt. Hood Town Hall, 6575 Highway 35, Mt. Hood, just across the street from the Mt. Hood Country Store. Cremation arrangements have been made under the direction of Anderson’s Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River, Ore.
