Johnny Garland “J.R.” Roberts, 78, passed away on Aug. 20, 2012, at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital in Hood River, Ore. Johnny was born Feb. 15, 1934, in Forsyth, Mo.
J.R. moved with his family to California and then to Hood River in 1947. He served the United States proudly during the Korean War in the Army.
On Aug. 8, 1956, he married Charlotte Gilmore in Stevenson, Wash., and they made their home in Hood River. He owned the Valley Hop Shop, where he was a sought-after mechanic for area “hot rods” and “Jeepers,” helping put many big motors in small Jeeps over the years. J.R. was also an aeronautical mechanic and crop duster pilot for Aero Spray for 25 years.
J.R. enjoyed the outdoors; hunting, fishing and driving his Jeep around the hills. He was an avid pilot and loved to fly through the Gorge and the Valley. He volunteered for Hood River Search and Rescue for 45 years.
J.R. is survived and will be dearly missed by his wife, Charlotte Roberts; children, Grant and Sandra Porter, Terri and Mark Lesage, Cathy Roberts and Tony Espinal, Michael and Beth Roberts and Joey Roberts; grandchildren, Shannon and Shane Willis and Tyson and Maggie Hazlett; great-grandchild, Aiden (Herkamer) Willis; brother, Troy Roberts; and sister, Dorene Roberts, of Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A celebration of J.R.’s life is planned for 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, at the family home, 3000 Dee Highway, Hood River.
