Chiyeko Grace Fukui, 86, passed away at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital on Jan. 7, 2012. Grace was born on April 27, 1925, in Inglewood, Calif., to Heijiro and Waka (Suzuki) Funada.
She attended Inglewood High School and graduated while she was interned at the Heart Mountain Relocation Center in Wyoming during World War II. There, she met her future husband, Keiichi Kay Fukui. They were married on June 1, 1947, at Asbury United Method Church in Hood River, Ore. She then joined Kay as an orchardist in Dee and later also worked for Diamond Fruit Growers.
Grace is survived by her son, Stanley Fukui, and his wife, Liz, of Bothell, Wash.; daughters Shirley Babb and her husband, Gerry, of Gladstone, Ore., and Kathi Barckley and her husband, Don, of Portland, Ore.; and sisters Fumiko Furukawa, of Los Angeles, Calif., and Kiyoko Hikida, of Cypress, Calif.
She is also survived by grandchildren Tia Jones, of Gladstone, Kristi Deschuytter and her husband, Ben, of Vancouver, Wash., Jennifer Barckley, of New York City, and Benjamin and Bradley Fukui, of Bothell. Four great-grandchildren, Gabe, Marisa and Tyler Jones and Nolan Deschuytter, also survive, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Her husband, Kay, brothers Shohei (George) Funada and Tsuyoshi (Frank) Funada, and grandson Christopher Babb preceded her in death.
Private family services have been held. Interment was at Idlewilde Cemetery in Hood River.
