Robert Noel "Bob" Nichols, 54, of Hood River, Ore., died Jan. 22, 2012, from a sudden heart attack while shoveling out a friend's driveway. He was born Dec. 23, 1957, the third son to Richard and Kathleen Nichols, of Hood River.
Bob attended local schools and was a 1976 graduate of Hood River Valley High School. He worked in several local businesses but ultimately followed his father and grandfather into the boat-building trade and managed the former Nichols Boat Works for a number of years.
Most recently, he worked in collaboration with Sundance Yacht Sales and Marinas in Portland on a design for a new 32-foot fiberglass yacht. He also served previously as a port commissioner for the Port of Hood River.
He married Kai Burgess Borton on March 24, 1990. They had one son, Charles August Nichols.
Bob enjoyed travel and was an avid sports fisherman. He fulfilled one of his lifetime goals in 2011 by catching and releasing a marlin off Cabo San Lucas.
He is survived by his mother, Kathleen Nichols, his former wife, Kai Nichols, and their son, Charles, all of Hood River; brothers Rodger Nichols and his wife Julie Reynolds, of The Dalles, and Thomas Nichols and his wife, Dwynn, of Cottage Grove; nieces Roxanne Nichols, Regina Biagi, Amanda Mathena and Ellen Yeoman and nephew Tyler Nichols; and several great-nieces and nephews.
A celebration of his life and reception will be held at noon Saturday, Jan. 28, at Anderson's Tribute Center, in Hood River, followed by graveside service at Pine Grove Cemetery.
