James “Jim” E. Willey, of Pendleton, Ore., passed away June 15, 2012, at the Oregon Veterans Home in The Dalles after a long illness.
He was born Jan. 6, 1940, in Hood River, Ore., to Fred W. and Henrietta (Kolterman) Willey. Jim married Marilyn Flory on July 5, 1985, in Manteo, N.C. He graduated from Wy’east High School in Hood River in 1958 and also attended trade and cooking schools.
He served in the United States Navy for 10 years and later as a chief steward for the merchant marines until his retirement in 2005.
He enjoyed taking photographs while exploring and traveling, computers, fishing, music, woodworking and spending time with his family, friends and his dog Bandit.
He was a member of the Freemasons and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Willey, of Pendleton; mother, Henrietta Willey, of Hood River; brother, Bill (Karen) Willey, of Dundee; sons Jerry (Noelle) Decker, of Brentwood, Calif., Gene (Sandra) Decker, of Odell, and Walter Willey, of Portland; daughters Karla (Ronald) Fransen, of Dallesport, Wash., and Lee Vaughn, of Molalla; and grandchildren Alex, Brandon, Bryan (Ellen) Kelly, Chelsea, Corey, Katalina and Kory.
He was preceded in death by his father, Fred.
Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to the Pendleton Fire Department and the American Lung Association.
Visitation will be held Friday, June 22, from 3-5 p.m. at Anderson’s Tribute Center. A graveside service will take place Saturday, June 23, at 11 a.m. at Parkdale Cemetery with a reception to follow at 12:30 p.m. at Grace Su’s China Gorge Restaurant.
