February 28, 1926 - November 23, 2012

Helen Gladys Muhs passed away Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, in Hood River, Ore. Helen was born Feb. 28, 1926, in Swain County, N.C., to John and Una Cochran.
Mom lived in Bryson City. She and her nine brothers and sisters would work in the garden in the morning and enjoyed swimming in the swimming hole near their house in the afternoon. They made their own fun playing games with each other.
Helen married Marvel “Swede” Muhs in Vancouver, Wash., on Aug. 5, 1946, and to their union were blessed three children: Allen “Butch,” Barbara and Kimberly. Together, they enjoyed drives in the valley on Sunday afternoons, holidays with family, reunions and get-togethers with her sisters and brothers.
Helen enjoyed trips to the coast, going to church, listening to Gospel music, going out for lunch and spending time with her grandkids and great-grandkids.
She moved to Parkdale in 1945. There, she and Marvel later bought their first home. She worked seasonally in the packing house and later as a grocery clerk for DeHart’s Market and retired from Mid Valley IGA. She enjoyed talking with all the people coming through her register and getting to know all the delivery people.
