Richard “Rick” Bertschy, 63, passed away Jan. 12, 2014, surrounded by his caregivers at Hood River Care Center in Hood River, Ore. Rick was born April 9, 1950, in Mountain Home, Idaho, to James and Rosella Samel Bertschy-Dipp.
Rick grew up in Idaho, Oregon and Washington. He graduated from Bruneau High School in Idaho. After his high school education he joined the Navy for four years, serving in Japan at one time.
Due to an accident in the early 1980s he was left disabled for several years, slowly recovering. Rick worked as a caregiver and worked repairing appliances. He also enjoyed photography.
The family describes Rick as soft-spoken, gentle and private man who had a wicked sense of humor.
Rick is survived and will be dearly missed by his sister, Carolynn “Jill” Ashwell, and her husband, Gary, of South Carolina; his aunt, Iona Hoare, of Portland, Ore.; sons Russell and Jessie; and two grandchildren, Jacob and Catherine.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Rosella Bertschy-Dipp, sister Annette Muth and uncle Gordon Hoare.
Memorials are encouraged to be made in Rick’s name to Providence Hospice of the Gorge.
A private family inurnment was held Jan. 17 at Idlewilde Cemetery in Hood River.
