Paul K. Larive died Wednesday, May 21, 2014, with his loving wife of 43 years, Rachel, by his side at his home in Hood River, Ore. Paul was born Dec. 21, 1932, in Hot Springs, S.D., to Theodore and Laura (Stainbrook) Larive.
Paul graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1954 then went on to earn his doctorate degree in medicine from George Washington University in 1958. He served in the United States Navy as a lieutenant commander, medicine, for four years.
Paul was married to Patricia Brady for 15 years and they had five children together. In 1970, Paul married Rachel Jones Friedenreich, having one child together.
Paul filled his life with learning, extensive travel to over 50 countries in Asia, Africa and Europe. He lived in Libya, Guam, Saudi Arabia and throughout the United States including Hawaii.
Paul loved the medical profession and his career included emergency medicine, family care, pediatrics and OB/GYN. He helped countless people along the way, including emergency care for people he came upon in the course of his travels.
He enjoyed literature, travel, art, music, Nordic skiing, food from around the world and the company of his family and friends.
Paul will always be remembered for his concern for his fellow man, his generosity for those near him, his thirst for knowledge and his love of the world around him. He cherished his time with his wife, Rachel, and the experiences they had together were the fondest of his life.
Paul is survived by his wife, Rachel Larive; sons Ted Larive, of San Diego, Calif., Jeff Larive and his wife, Karla, of Santa Cruz, Calif., Tim Larive and his wife, Katie, of Ashland, Ore., and Chris Larive, of Vail, Colo., daughter Katherine Larive Smith and her spouse, Yvan, of Vacaville, Calif., son John Friedenreich and his wife, Catherine, of Auburn, Ala., and daughter Lisa Larive Vance and spouse Shannon, of Hood River; grandchildren Lucas Smith and his wife, Rayna, Adelaide Smith, Dylan Smith, Ian Larive, Sophia Larive, Noah Larive, Samuel Larive, and Grace, Robert, Charles and Phillip Friedenreich; great-grandchildren Giada and Keira and parents Lucas and Rayna Smith.
Per Paul’s request there will be no services or ceremonies. Please send condolence letters to the Larive family in care of Anderson’s Tribute Center.
