Melvin “Mel” Anthony Cordie, 91, passed away Oct. 10, 2014, at his home in Hood River, Ore. Mel was born Feb. 18, 1923, in St. Cloud, Minn., to Nicholas and Catherine (Essner) Cordie, one of 12 children. He grew up in Minnesota and was an avid sportsman; fishing and bow hunting being his favorites.
He served our country proudly during World War II as a radio officer on Merchant Marine ships.
Mel married Delores Stich on May 28, 1949, in St. Cloud, Minn., and they were blessed with four children: Joan, Debra, Nancy and Robert. He was an amazing family man and was greatly loved by his wife of 65 years, his children, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His greatest gift was the joy of his laughter and his love of being with his family. Mel and Delores moved to Hood River in 1993.
He was proud of his service and was a member of a Merchant Marine Veterans Group and St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Mel is survived and will be dearly missed by his wife, Delores Cordie, of Hood River; children Joan (Mike) Eckert, of St. Paul, Minn., Debra (Pete) Himes, of Portland, Ore., Nancy (Richard) Cordie, of Kapaa, Hawaii, and Robert (Lisa) Cordie; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
