Donald Lee Lowry passed away suddenly at the Peace Health Vancouver, Wash., hospital on Dec. 1, 2015, after just turning 89. Donald was born in Lead, S.D., and attended school there through high school. He attended Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish, S.D., and graduated July 3, 1951 with a B.S. in education. He married Marguerite Merchant, who graduated a year before; July 7, 1950.
Marguerite taught a year in Redmond, Ore., and then obtained a teaching job for Don at Redmond Union High School. Don and Marguerite moved to Hood River, Ore., in 1966 where he was an audio visual librarian for the Hood River County School District. Don received a federal grant to attend the University of Tennessee for his master’s degree in 1971 and returned back to Hood River a year later.
Don loved playing cribbage, billiards with the guys and enjoyed having his little Sheltie Ruby dog by his side, which we took to visit Don at rehab and hospital each day.
Don is survived by his wife, Marguerite Lowry; daughter, Jodi Pate; and son, Cecil Warner.
His funeral service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 19, at 2 p.m. at Fort Vancouver National Site in the Red Cross Building, 605 Barnes Road, Vancouver, WA 98661. Donations in Don’s memory may be made to the Humane Society of South West Washington, 1100 N.E. 192nd Ave., Vancouver, WA 98684.
