Barbara Nelson Walters passed peacefully on Oct. 9, 2015, in the medical center in Redmond, Ore., after her COPD could no longer be managed. Barbara was born June 21, 1952, in Astoria, Ore., to Alfred and Martha Nelson. She attended Lewis and Clark Consolidated, then on to Astoria High School class of 1970.
She enjoyed spending her time outside in her garden, wood working, doing hand crafts, art projects and reading. When asked what she would like for Christmas or a birthday, Barb would always choose to receive a power tool over jewelry or anything else for her many craft projects.
Barb was fiercely independent, had a quick wit and loved a good joke. She also was a great cook and made the world’s best salsa with peppers and tomatoes from her garden. Her heart was always with the animals, whether it be watching and feeding the wild birds in the yard or taking care of her dogs, cats and the many other animals they had throughout the years.
Barb loved family and friends and even when health concerns limited her ability to travel, she always kept in touch.
She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Michael Walters, of Madras, Ore.; stepson Spencer Walters, his wife Karrie and granddaughter Audrey Anna; stepdaughter Stephanie Ross, her husband Bob with grandsons Conor and Hudson; brother Ken Nelson, of Astoria, and sister Deb Selson, of Casa Grande, Ariz.; eight nieces and nephews, 18 grand nieces and nephews and many cousins and friends.
Her older brother, Alfred Nelson, passed in 2013.
In honor of her great love of animals, in lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to High Desert Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation (highdesertwildlife.com). Just indicate it is in loving memory of Barbara Nelson Walters. (High Desert Wildlife is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.)
Arrangements are under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home, 762 N.E. 10th St., Madras, OR 97741; 541-475-2241.
