Allen Ernest Springer U.S. Veteran

Hood River

June 3, 1930 - December 11, 2016

Allen Ernest Springer was born June 3, 1930, to Elmer and Mary (Nash) Springer in Hood River, Ore. He passed away Dec. 11, 2016, at his home in Hood River. He was 86 years old.

Allen and siblings Bud, Irene, and Leroy were raised and attended schools in Hood River. Allen graduated from Hood River High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the army and served in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged from the army and moved to Heppner, Ore., to look for work. He found work at the Frenchglen sawmill and there met the love of his life, Lola Padberg. They married on Nov. 2, 1953, in Heppner and spent 58 happy years together before Lola passed in 2012.

After their marriage, Allen worked in Heppner for the county road department driving dump truck and it was during this time that his first son, Don, was born. They later moved to Joseph, Ore., and Allen worked on the Walter Brennan property. He was very proud of that and had many wonderful stories and memories of that time. They later moved back to Hood River where their daughter and youngest son, Georgia and Jeff, were born.

Allen continued his work in the sawmill industry, working at the Dee sawmill and Neal Creek Sawmill before changing to a warmer environment as a janitor for the Pine Grove school. He retired from the school district in 1992.

Allen loved being with his family, camping, hunting (he especially looked forward to hunting deer with his family at the Summerfield Ridge near Heppner), fishing, bowling (he bowled on league for several years), working picture puzzles, and sports. He frequently attended his grandson’s sports events. He also loved the Blazers, attending several games with his friend, Margaret Strasser. You couldn’t tear him away from a game! Allen loved his sports so much that when they went elk hunting they had to take a TV and antennas to camp with them so that Allen could watch the World Series!

Allen was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lola, his brother Bud, and sister Irene Peterson.
Allen is survived and will be dearly missed by his sons Don Springer (Chris) and Jeff Springer (Jennifer) of Hood River, and daughter Georgia Marshall (Bob) of Pendleton, Ore., grandchildren Katie Smiley (Karl) and Tom Springer (Canela) of Hood River, Robert Marshall (Tracy) of North Bend, Ore., Jeremy Marshall (Jackie) and and Ivamay Tallman of Pendleton, Michelle King (Shayln) of Benton City, Wash., Josh Marshall (Shiloh) of Valdez, Alaska, and Ashley Murphy (John) of Miffinville, Pa. He is also survived and will be dearly missed by his 18 great grandchildren, his brother Leroy of Moro, Ore., and close family friends Fred and Marlene Lahti, Beverly Shapley, and Margaret Strasser.
