Micheal (“Mick”) Shibahara passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2017, at his Portland, Ore., home surrounded by family. He was 75. Micheal was born to parents Masahiko and Yoshino (Takeoka) Shibahara in Parkdale, Ore., where he grew up. Mick was one of nine children in the family. He attended Wy’east High School and then served in the U.S Army from 1962-1964. Following his honorable discharge, he attended Portland State University and graduated with a degree in physics.
Mick worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 22 years. He was a compassionate and caring man, devoting much of his retirement years to Meals-on-Wheels and producing and filming subjects for the local access television networks in his community. Mick enjoyed encyclopedic interests and hobbies throughout his life, including photography, videography, collecting vinyl albums and recording their music on CDs, making guitars, and mushroom hunting and fishing, among others.
Mick is survived by his brother Matthew Shibahara (Jackie) of Estacada, Ore., sisters Kazuko Honda (Shig) of Olympia, Wash., Ella Hasegawa (Jim) and Aki McLay of Hood River, Ore., and Judy Welch of Portland, and many beloved nieces and nephews and their children. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Hugo Shibahara and wife Agnes of Parkdale, and sisters Martha Yamamoto and husband David of Northridge, Calif., Ada Shirota and husband Dean of Portland, and brother-in-law Shig Honda.
A memorial service and reception for Mick will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1825 May Ave., Hood River, on Wednesday, Dec. 13 at 11 a.m. Friends and family are cordially invited to attend. A private interment will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mick’s name may be made to the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute (website at OnwardOHSU.org/cancer) or your local Meals on Wheels.
