Gregory Lysle Place, a resident of The Dalles, Ore., for 44 years, passed away on Feb. 10, 2018. Greg was born in Hanover, N.H., on Oct. 8, 1951, to Maurice and Beverly Place. He was the second of seven children and is survived by his siblings Debi, Jayne, Maureen, Robin, Todd and Jason, all of New Hampshire. Greg grew up in West Lebanon, N.H., and graduated in 1969. He joined the Marines after high school. Following his discharge, he came to The Dalles to visit friends and met his future wife, Betsy Commander. They were together 44 years.
He is survived by his wife, Betsy; sons Graham, Jake and Mahlcolm (Dawn); and grandchildren Leiana, Kailynn, Rowdy and Saylor. Greg will be missed by numerous nieces, nephews and a large extended family.
When his boys were younger, Greg coached their Tee-ball, baseball and soccer teams. Greg worked at the aluminum plants in The Dalles and Goldendale, Wash., until each of them closed. He also worked at Dolphin International in The Dalles until it closed. From 2001 until his retirement, Greg worked as maintenance supervisor at Turtle Island in Hood River, Ore. Greg enjoyed his many gold-panning adventures with his friend, Hinze. He loved the outdoors, going to elk camp every year, and enjoyed carpentry work after his retirement. He will be greatly missed by his numerous pets.
